500,000 Miles! One Owner Clean Carfax, Fully Serviced, Super Clean!

001(1)

This Sequoia has had over $7,700 worth of new and recent parts and service including a new timing belt and water pump as well as Virginia safety and emissions inspections, details of which are further down in the description. Keep that in mind when comparing this Sequoia to the others listed here.

This is a 2003 Toyota Sequoia 4X4 finished in two-tone Natural White with Warm Silver metallic bumpers and trim and the Oak tan leather interior. It’s best to view the listing on a desktop or laptop computer. A smartphone won’t give you the same details. While this truck has over half a million miles, it looks, runs and drives like one with 100,000 miles. This gives you bragging rights among your friends and family as having the highest mileage vehicle around. Just imagine the expression on their faces and how impressed they will be after you have taken them for a ride, and then say it has over 500,000 miles on it. Their jaws will drop and you will get instant street cred and props for keeping such a high mileage vehicle on the road. Go to any cruise night or off-road event and as soon as someone notices the decals on the back showing 300,000 Miles, 400,000 Miles and 500,000 Miles, you will get swamped with questions. Even at the mall or supermarket parking lot, similar attention will follow from perfect strangers. If you’re the least bit shy or don’t like attention, don’t buy this truck, I warn you. Or at least remove those decals.

The Sequoia is powered by a 4.7 liter 32-valve Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) i-Force® V8 engine that has received numerous rave reviews by engineers and the automotive press for its high torque output, inherent smoothness and excellent durability. This engine is also used on the Land Cruiser as well as Lexus GX and LX SUVs. Its power output is a strong 240 horsepower, but its torque rating of 315 lb. ft. is excellent. Its history can be traced back to the Lexus LS400 sedan introduced in 1990, and has since earned the reputation of being one of Toyota’s most reliable and bulletproof engines. It’s an under-stressed low-revving 90° V8 design. Code named 2UZ-FE, this engine features a cast iron engine block in trucks and SUVs for maximum rigidity and durability, aluminum cylinder heads and intake manifold for light weight and excellent heat dissipation, multi-port fuel injection for excellent gas mileage, distributorless coil on plug (COP) ignition for reliability in all environmental conditions, and drive by wire electronic throttle for precise control of drivability parameters. The exhaust cams are gear driven directly off the intake cams unlike most other engines with complicated chain driven cams, tensioners and guides that can wear out. Also, 2003 models still have conventional valve timing before Toyota added VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing) in ’05. While VVT-i did bump up horsepower, the increase in torque was negligible at only 10 more lb. ft., which isn’t worth the added complexity and repair costs the additional parts entail, especially on an older vehicle.

The engine is mated to a 4-speed electronically controlled Aisin-Warner A340F automatic transmission with intelligence (ECT-i®). The intelligence part monitors engine parameters and calculates optimum shift points and shift feel for luxury car smoothness. With these capabilities, it can adjust internal fluid pressures and clutch pack application settings to compensate for wear. What that means is that transmission shifts will feel the same at 500,000 miles as it did when it was new, and will still feel the same at 1,000,000 miles. Like the engine, this transmission is one of Toyota’s most durable units and has been around in various iterations since the 1980’s. Its had many years to receive design improvements in an era from which reliability took precedence over cost cutting. Case in point: it still has a dipstick so checking, adding and changing fluid is still a simple task, unlike the 5-speed transmissions used in 2004 models which did away with the dipstick and you have to crawl under the vehicle to check the fluid using a scan tool to monitor the temperature. Also, the transmission pan has a drain plug so you can do quick spill-and-fill transmission fluid changes every other oil change to make sure the transmission gets to a million miles. In order for 2004 models to get five speeds into a transmission that fit into the space of this truck’s 4-speed transmission, the internal parts had to be made smaller. What that means is the gears in this 4-speed transmission are thicker, as are the clutch packs, bands and bearings then those in the later model Sequoia 5-speed transmissions. That means it will be under less stress and last longer. This transmission has a low first gear that provides brisk acceleration, while the high top gear allows for effortless highway cruising and good fuel mileage. In fact, at 60 mph the engine is turning at just 1,800 rpm. I have been averaging over 19 mpg, but when driven with restraint, you can expect in the 20’s mpg on the highway. (Disclaimer: YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY) And with a fuel tank capacity of 26 gallons, you can expect a driving range of around 500 miles between fill-ups requiring only regular gas.

Rounding out the Sequoia are a go anywhere four-wheel drive system with a locking center differential, powerful brakes, and a suspension that can go over the roughest terrain while at the same time smoothing out potholes and frost heaves on your daily commute for a smooth luxury car like ride. Four-wheel drive has a manually shifted two-speed transfer case that goes from normal H (High) range to L4 (Low) range for maximum pulling power. This is more reliable and trouble-free than electronically shifted systems. Two switches on the dash control 4WD and locking differential operation while front hubs are auto-locking and unlocking so you never have to get out of the vehicle to engage or disengage four-wheel drive. N (Neutral) is used for flat towing the Sequoia such as behind a motor home. The Sequoia also has an Active Traction Control system (TRAC) which supplements and greatly enhances four-wheel drive to help prevent the wheels from spinning when the vehicle is started on slippery surfaces. It also operates in two-wheel drive mode. For secure stopping there are oversize four-wheel disc brakes with ABS (Anti-Lock Brakes) and Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) that can sense panic stopping and automatically apply maximum braking power to each wheel individually to potentially reduce stopping distances. Front calipers are a massive 4-piston fixed design. The parking brake operates on the inside hat of the rear rotors to act as an additional and separate braking system for ever greater stopping power compared to most systems that just piggyback onto the rear caliper for the parking brakes. The Sequoia’s Vehicle Skid Control system (VSC) uses the components from the ABS system and the electronic throttle to regulate engine torque to enhance directional control with over/understeering of the vehicle being counteracted by applying brakes to the appropriate wheel to create a countervailing vehicle movement which helps prevent the vehicle from skidding when cornering on slippery roads. Steering is with a rack and pinion unit for precise handling, while the suspension system features coil springs at all four corners for a smooth ride that leaf springs can’t match. The front has an independent suspension while the rear has a multi-link solid axle design and there are anti-roll bars front and rear. With a traditional rugged body-on-frame construction and excellent ground clearance, it goes without saying that the Sequoia is one of the most capable vehicles in its class, and that it rides and handles better than many other SUVs costing thousands more.

The Sequoia was introduced in 2001 as Toyota’s first full-size SUV and was designed to provide more luxury and greater interior room with a third row seat, then the 4Runner, but at a price point $10,000 below that of the Land Cruiser. It was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award and its V8 engine was certified as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. It was a “clean sheet” ground-up design that combined traditional Toyota styling cues from their upscale models into a mainstream full size SUV. Its dimensions are similar in size to the Ford Expedition and larger than the Chevy Tahoe. Its styling is smooth, rounded and flowing. From its sleek lines and soft curves incorporating elements from premium luxury sedans, it looks handsome from any angle without being flashy.

A quick walk around the truck reveals how the Sequoia is one of the most stylish vehicles ever created in the full-size class of SUVs. Start up front with its clean smooth lines and a large upper grille in the hood surrounded by clear lens headlights with jewel-effect reflectors. Below that is a honeycomb mesh grille in the bumper surrounded by fog lights. Continuing back at the sides of the truck, oversize fender flares give a rugged off-road stance that frames the large Goodyear Wrangler tires and bright machine finish alloy wheels. Running boards with slip-resistant rubber inserts along with body color mirrors, door handles and bodyside moldings add visual appeal. The dark privacy glass in the rear doors and quarter windows look sharp in contrast to the white body. Up top the roof rack maximizes carrying capabilities for large items like kayaks. Continuing back to the rear, a large tailgate functions as a rain shield when open so tailgating fun doesn’t have to stop if a storm rolls in. The rear bumper has a slip-resistant rubber insert and can function as a seating bench. Large two piece taillights in the tailgate and body as well as reflectors in the bumper increase visibility.

The exterior is beautiful to look at, but the inside is just as welcoming. Unlock the doors with the remote, or on a warm day, use the convenience function to open the front windows before opening the door to let the hot air out. Using the running board, step up into the captains chair that adjusts to the perfect driving position with 10-way power adjustment for forward/backward, up/down, recline and lumbar support. Take a look outside and notice the commanding view and how secure it feels to be able to look over most other vehicles on the road. Check out how supportive the seat is and how comfortable the cushions feel. Then adjust the tilt steering wheel to achieve complete driving control. Notice how the thickly padded rim affords just the right grip and that the cruise control and remote radio switches are just a fingertip away. Now glance above you at the large glass sunroof that lets in light in all weather conditions and opens up on nice sunny days. Next, look ahead at the dashboard with the large and comprehensive easy to read gauges including a tachometer, coolant temperature, oil pressure and volts gauges. Look right and left at the interior trim on the door panels and dash as well as the carpet and headliner. Press the buttons for the radio, cruise control or windows. Not only is the styling all premium, but all the textures have a rich feel and look and all the switchgear have a precise soft touch action. From the design of the leather in the seats, the graining pattern on the dash and door panels, or the layout of the knobs and switches on the dash, everything looks and feels like it came from a more expensive luxury car.

Now put the key in the ignition and start the engine. Notice that it starts instantly whether hot or cold and hear how silently the engine idles. Next, take it for a spin. Lightly step on the gas pedal and feel how effortlessly the truck accelerates and how smoothly the transmission shifts gears. Drive over some bumps and see how the suspension gives a secure yet comfortable ride. Now accelerate and enjoy the torque as the engine pins you back in your seat. At the next traffic light, step on the brakes and feel how smoothly they perform with no pedal pulsations or pulling to one side. So whether on congested city streets, open highways, or off-road mountain trails, you will be amazed how smooth, quick and comfortable this Sequoia is to drive.

The new cost of this Sequoia was $42,885 back in 2003, so with tax, title and tags, the original owner paid over $45,000 plus additional market adjustment markups (read rip off) of a few more thousand dollars. The Sequoia was available in 4 versions. With or without four-wheel drive and in SR5 or Limited trim levels. The Limited had more equipment included in its base price of $43,520 which was $8,400 more than the base price of this SR5. However, most of that equipment was optional and included on this SR5, such that it cost within just a few hundred dollars of a Limited. What that means is you can have all the luxury features, comforts and amenities of the Limited model with the more rugged and sporty image and looks of the SR5. CLICK HERE to see the 2003 price sheet. Items with a red dot are included in the cost. Items with a black dot are on the truck but are included in a separate package so are not included in the cost.

The truck is in great condition inside and out. It has an excellent dent-free body with hardly any of the nicks, dings or blemishes you would normally expect on a vehicle of this age or mileage. Mostly just some touched up scratches on the rear bumper. There are a few rusted areas on the frame and on the dog legs behind the rear doors, but not significant enough as it passed Virginia safety inspection on April 14th. The paint itself is beautiful and shiny and this Natural White just about glows in the sunlight. It has been fully detailed, first with Meguiar’s Iron Decon, then the paint was cleaned with Meguiar’s Smooth Surface Clay System, polished with Meguiar’s M110 Mirror Glaze cleaner polish and coated with Meguiar’s M27 Pro Hybrid Ceramic Sealant for a durable long lasting brilliant high gloss shine. The headlights were detailed with the 3M headlight polishing system for a crystal clear look, and then coated with 3M headlight clearcoat. All the glass, moldings, trim and emblems are excellent and I had the front bumper refinished for scratches and chips. The alloy wheels have some areas of corrosion under the clearcoat. I checked the truck out top to bottom and found no evidence that is was ever wrecked or that it even has had any significant paint or bodywork done to it. Remember, it’s hard enough to find a two or three year old vehicle that hasn’t had at least a fender-bender requiring a hood, fender or bumper to be replaced or repaired, let alone a nearly 20 year old one with half a million miles. The truck still has the original VIN stickers on all the body panels, indicating its had no major accidents that would have necessitated their replacement.

The interior is beautiful as well. It has very nice upholstery, carpet, headliner, dashboard and door panels with no rips or tears or any significant signs of wear. The second row seat has a few small minor stains as well as the carpet under the third row that some deep cleaning should remove. The leather is soft and supple and has been treated with Lexol leather conditioner. The truck doesn‘t have any smokers smell and the ashtray or lighter don’t appear to have ever been used. The cargo area looks like it was hardly ever used, and the engine compartment is very clean.

Mechanically it runs and drives great. The engine runs strong and feels smooth at idle, while accelerating and throughout the cruising range and it starts instantly whether hot or cold. Internally the engine looks cleaner than most 100,000 mile engines as the under valve cover pictures below show. It has no sign of any sludge or even varnish. This is an engine that is destined to make it to a million miles. The check engine light comes on occasionally for a code P0442, small evaporative emissions leak, but it hasn’t affected the ability to pass emissions since you can get it tested before the light goes on. The transmission shifts smoothly at all speeds. The steering wheel is on dead center going down the road with no shakes or vibrations at speed, the brakes are firm with no pedal pulsations or pulling to one side when stopping and the suspension is tight. The A/C blows ice cold from the front but not cold in the back. The heat works great front and rear. The power antenna sometimes sticks partway up or down. It has a matching set of four Goodyear Wrangler RT/S tires with very good tread. These tires combine an open lug tread design, M+S rated exceptional all-season wet/dry traction, a comfortable ride, excellent handling and good tread life. They ride smooth on the highway but can still take on deep snow and most off-road conditions. The truck has a full size BFGoodrich spare tire with good tread and a matching fifth alloy wheel.

And finally, the on-board diagnostics were scanned and show only evaporative emissions codes pending, and more important, all but one of the emissions system readiness monitors have been completed, the evaporative emissions monitor. Most states will allow a 2003 model to pass an emissions inspection with one readiness monitor incomplete.

In fact, the truck has a new Virginia emissions inspection. This isn’t a guaranty that the truck will pass inspection in any other state, as a fault can occur at any time without warning.

259

What that also means is the CHECK ENGINE light wasn’t reset in order to turn it off to hide an existing fault. If an emissions system has a bad part causing the CHECK ENGINE light to illuminate, some of the emissions readiness monitors will be incomplete and the truck won’t pass an emissions inspection. Some sellers will reset the CHECK ENGINE light to make it appear like there are no issues at the time of sale, but the light will come back on shortly afterwards. It can take hundreds of miles for the readiness monitors to run to completion, so the fact that the required number of readiness monitors have been completed (scanner shows Monitors Incomplete: 1) indicates the CHECK ENGINE light hasn’t been reset and that at the time the truck was scanned, it would pass an emissions inspection

And it also has a new Virginia safety inspection. And again, this isn’t a guaranty that the truck will pass inspection in any other state.

Overall this is a very sharp Toyota Sequoia that looks great in this Natural White color and contrasting Warm Silver trim. It’s a one owner clean Carfax® southern truck from Maryland which probably explains why it’s so clean. CLICK HERE to see the Carfax report, and CLICK HERE to see the title.

If you are serious about buying a first generation Sequoia, this is one of the cleanest and most serviced examples your will find. Remember, you can get a great deal on Ebay with prices sometimes way below retail, but no bidder is going to “steal” a vehicle and no seller is going to give one away either. Also when comparing prices, remember the things that you won’t have to spend money on soon after getting it home. With this truck you won’t have to spend $1,000-$2,000 on paint or bodywork, you won’t have to spend $1,600 on a timing belt and water pump service, you won’t have to spend $1,000 on upholstery repairs or a headliner, you won’t have to spend $800 for a new set of tires, you won’t have to spend $800 on a set of springs and shocks, you won’t have to spend $700 on a set of ball joints and alignment service, you won’t have to spend $600 on a complete front brake service, you won’t have to spend $400 on a complete rear brake service, you won’t have to spend $300 on a coolant, and brake fluid change, you won’t have to spend $300 on a transmission, transfer case, and differential fluid change, you won’t have to spend $300 on a tune-up and filters service and you won’t have to spend $300 on any upcoming scheduled maintenance. With many of the other listings on Ebay, Craigslist or on dealers lots, you’re lucky if they even check the oil before delivery. When comparing this truck to the others, also keep in mind that this Sequoia was never wrecked, runs great, is fully serviced, hasn’t been smoked in and is clean inside and out.

The truck comes with all the books:

Two factory keys and remotes:

255

A set of factory carpeted embroidered floor mats:

And a factory Toyota first aid kit:

If you are looking for a first generation Toyota Sequoia in beautiful condition, this truck is hard to beat. Also remember that I don’t have dealer processing fees or document fees that many other listings have for $200 or more and bury in their fine print. The Kelly Blue Book fair market range on this Sequoia is $5,200 to $7,200 even with these miles, and with a fair purchase price of $6,200 which doesn’t even consider the thousands in parts and service it has received. CLICK HERE to see the KBB price. So please don’t waste your time with $3,000 or $4,000 offers. Located in the Suburban Washington DC area. Delivery possible at reasonable cost.
